Girls and Boys Town and the University of Johannesburg are pleased to distribute the 2020 report on care-leaving in South Africa. This is a mixed-methods longitudinal study with 150 participants (at baseline) with data collected annually over seven years from 2012 to 2019. (We collected eight-year data at the end of 2020.) The report presents quantitative results concerning:
- A description of participants at the time of leaving care.
- A description of a range of care-leaving outcomes over the first six years of leaving care. (We omitted the seventh year due to the small sample size.)
- An examination of the contribution of resilience variables measured at baseline to care-leaving outcomes over the first six years out of care.
- Based on the results, we draw implications for in-care and aftercare practice.
We hope that this report may provide helpful points of comparison in the south of Africa for your research elsewhere in the world.
